THE AÇAÌ
Scientific name: Oleracea Euterpe
Açaí is the fruit of the known palm as açaizeiro. It is a native species of fertile valleys of the Amazon region, specifically of the following countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Equator, Guianas and Brazil (states of Amazon, Amapá, Pará and Maranhão). Açaí is a very important food in the diet of the inhabitants of the Amazônia, where its consumption retraces to the pre-Columbian times. Nowadays it is cultivated not alone in the Amazon region, but in diverse other Brazilian states, being introduced in the remaining portion of the national market during the Eighties and ninety.

 

The açaizeiro is very similar to the palm juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart.) of Atlantic Mata, differentiating itself for growing in the 25 touceiras of 3 estipes (palm trunks). Of the palm, everything is used to advantage: fruits (food and artesanato), leves (coverings of houses, braids), estipe (roof laths), raízes (vermifugal), palmito (food and anti-hemorágico remedy).

It is consumed in the form of drinks, candies, jellies and ices cream. The fruit is harvested going up in the palm with the aid of one braid of leaf moored to the feet - the peconha.
